Every e-Invoice submitted to MyInvois requires the issuer to specify their business's MSIC code — this tells LHDN (and by extension, national statistics bodies) what industry or activity the transaction relates to. It's part of the structured data that makes e-Invoice more useful than a plain PDF invoice: at scale, it lets regulators and policymakers see economic activity by sector, not just by taxpayer.
MSIC codes are 5 digits, organised hierarchically — broader sections (like "Manufacturing" or "Wholesale and Retail Trade") break down into progressively more specific classes (like "Retail sale of clothing" vs "Retail sale of food"). A business selects the code that best matches its primary business activity, even if it does other things too.
Choose the MSIC code that reflects your primary revenue-generating activity. Some businesses register multiple MSIC codes if they have genuinely distinct significant business lines — check current LHDN/SSM guidance on how to handle mixed-activity businesses correctly.
