e-Invoice for Online Sellers (Shopee, Lazada & More)

Definition: Online sellers on marketplaces like Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop, as well as sellers on their own WooCommerce or webstore, are generally subject to the same e-Invoice obligations as any other business — the sales channel doesn't exempt you.

A lot of Malaysian micro-entrepreneurs started selling on Shopee or Lazada precisely because it felt simpler than "running a real business" — no shopfront, no need to think about tax infrastructure. e-Invoice changes that assumption a little, but it's manageable once you understand the shape of the problem.

What's different about marketplace selling

How this is typically handled

  1. Consolidated e-Invoice for routine orders — most B2C marketplace sales, with no individual e-Invoice requested, can be reported periodically as one consolidated submission rather than order-by-order.
  2. Individual e-Invoice on request — if a buyer specifically asks for one (for a business expense claim, for example), issue it individually with their details.
  3. Sync your own webstore — for sellers running their own WooCommerce store alongside marketplaces, a plugin (like TxBilling's) can sync orders directly so you're not manually re-entering every sale.
  4. Pure marketplace sellers — without a webstore, you may need to export order reports from the marketplace and import them into your billing/e-Invoice software periodically.

FAQ

Do Shopee and Lazada sellers need to issue e-Invoices?

Individual sellers are generally subject to e-Invoice based on the same criteria as any other business, mainly their own revenue level — check current LHDN guidance for any marketplace-specific arrangements, as platforms may have their own obligations too.

Can e-Invoice be automated for marketplace orders?

Yes — for your own webstore, a plugin can sync orders automatically. For pure marketplace sales, exporting order data periodically and using consolidated e-Invoice is the common approach.

What if a buyer wants an e-Invoice for a marketplace order?

Issue an individual e-Invoice using the buyer's provided details — you may need to request their TIN/BRN separately since marketplace checkouts don't typically collect it.

Note: Specific arrangements between LHDN and major marketplaces (if any) can evolve. Confirm current requirements on LHDN's official MyInvois resources.
