Most e-Invoice problems aren't deliberate non-compliance — they're small, avoidable errors that snowball. Here are the ones we see most often.
The single most common validation failure. A buyer's TIN needs to match LHDN's records exactly — a typo, an outdated TIN, or using the wrong format causes the e-Invoice to be rejected at submission. Fix: store verified customer TINs once in your billing system and reuse them, rather than retyping every time. See What is a TIN Number?
Once you spot an error, waiting even a day or two to act can mean missing LHDN's cancellation window. Fix: review new e-Invoices promptly, and if in doubt, cancel immediately rather than waiting. See the 72-hour cancellation rule.
Some businesses either consolidate transactions that should be individually invoiced (because a buyer requested one), or fail to consolidate eligible B2C transactions at all, creating unnecessary manual work. Fix: understand the distinction — see Self-Billed vs Consolidated e-Invoice.
Using an outdated or mismatched MSIC code can cause validation issues or misrepresent your business activity. Fix: confirm your correct code once via SSM records or the DOSM classification list. See What is an MSIC Code?.
Businesses that edit records outside their billing system, or don't retain cancelled/rejected e-Invoice history, struggle during audits. Fix: use a system that automatically logs every document and change, rather than relying on manual spreadsheets.
Assuming that not being SST-registered means e-Invoice doesn't apply (or vice versa). These are separate systems with separate rules. See SST and e-Invoice Explained.
Businesses that leave software selection, staff training, and customer data cleanup until the last minute tend to make more mistakes in their first weeks of compliance. Fix: start early — see our implementation timeline guide.
Entering an incorrect buyer TIN is one of the most frequent causes of validation failures, along with missing cancellation windows and inconsistent customer records.
Software that stores verified customer/TIN data once and reuses it on every future invoice reduces the manual re-entry errors that cause most e-Invoice mistakes.
